We had some dramatic snow in DC recently. This is a picture of the path up to my daughter’s daycare. It was amazingly beautiful, I wish I didn’t have to work and could have grabbed my real camera to take some pictures (this was from my phone). If I was up for it, it would have made for some great running.
I should have realized that I was going to have issues getting any real workouts in this week. I think I’m going to give up on the dream for the week and chalk things up to “figuring out how I’m going to logistically tackle getting my daughter to and from daycare while finding time to work and then figuring out how to get workouts in”. This is OK with me, especially since I quit taking the metro for a good portion of the daughter-daycare trades. This means I’m walking a whole lot more, and while it isn’t active running, it is doing something for me. With that, let’s look at yesterday:
Wednesday: Got up, got Sofia ready to go, took the Metro to Cleveland Park (I was running late), then walked her to her daycare (0.7 miles). Walked back to Cleveland Park (0.7 miles), took metro to Woodley (1 stop, it was questionable), walked to Adams’ Morgan for work (0.7 miles) which meant I walked 2.1 miles in the morning. After a few hours of work, I decided to walk directly to the day care to pick up Sofia (1.7 miles), then I decided to walk all the way home (1.4 miles) for a total of 3.1 miles on the back side. This means I walked about 5.2 miles yesterday or 8.3 km. This explains why I felt tired by the end (there are a lot of hills) and why I had a voracious appetite when it came time for dinner.
Now that I’ve found this route, I’m gonna stick with it, so, without further adieu, my day so far:
Thursday: Got up, got Sofia ready to go, took the Metro to Cleveland Park (really, I’m chronically late in the morning) and walked her to daycare (0.7 miles). Then, I walked straight to work (1.7 miles) for a total of 2.4 miles this morning. I plan to walk to her daycare, pick her up and walk all the way home again, so that will add another 3.1 miles to the walk, which will put me at 5.5 miles.
If I can start tacking on some real workouts, I think I’ve got some good potential for awesome. If nothing else, I’ve got a solid, solid base of walking long distances if I bonk during the run.
Yet another article on running barefoot.
I have a bit of a anti-corporate leaning to me. This is probably an understatement. If any of my family actually read that statement, there would be many chortles and guffaws. I have a very strong anti-corporate leaning. I have a bigger mistrust when the people who are telling me that I need special kinds of shoes are the ones that stand to profit from convincing me to buy said shoe.
This wasn’t helped by the fact that I got brand new shoes before the triathlon I was going to run, and then proceeded to get a stress fracture in my foot 2 weeks before the tri. The funny part is, I know this probably has more to do with increased volume than it does with the new shoes, but I still don’t trust the shoes. To this day, the shoes that worked the best for me are the Nike Free’s that I used to run (though they were a bit narrow for me). I may have to switch back, even though the running store suggested otherwise.

I’ve got a rough week coming up between starting up a new contract for work, starting daycare for my daughter (and I’m the one with a flexible schedule) and trying to get workouts in. I have a strong feeling that as much as I’d like this week to be a strong workout week, it is going to be rather week. The first two days show how this plays out…
Monday: The morning was spent getting Sofia to and from daycare for the first trial period, which meant about 3 miles of walking up and down a hill. When I got him, I hit the Wii Fit for 15 minutes of yoga + strength. When my wife came home from work, I got to the gym and hit the elliptical for 40 minutes. I still haven’t gotten myself back into running again. I’ll admit that I’ve been rather scared because of hurting myself last time, even though I know that is silly. Perhaps Wednesday I’ll see if I can switch between elliptical and the treadmill a bit (I don’t want to up the volume too much, too quickly again).
Tuesday: Zip, nada, zilch. OK, that’s not true, but due to time constraints I ended up driving my daughter to daycare, took the metro down to where I had a meeting, walked about 0.6 miles there and back (1.2 overall) then back up to daycare (0.7 miles), then all the way back home (1.4 miles) for a total of 3.2 miles. After that, I didn’t get anything in the way of a workout. I meant to do a whole lot, but Sofia wasn’t having any of that.
Lessons learned? Grab whatever time you can to get your workouts in, because you’re never going to be sure when you’ll have time. I’m hoping to get in some Wii Fit time tomorrow, as well as a bit of gym time. Don’t know if that is gonna happen.

According to this article, there is a shortage of Wii Fit Plus systems out there for sale.
Apparently, there are a lot of people out buying Wii Fit Plus these days. I remember this feeling when I first started looking at them, because they were out of stock everywhere and if you wanted to buy 3rd party, it was expensive. I’m sure they’ll get more of them in stock soon, but you should check out the larger warehouse type sites (aka — Amazon.com, you can follow this link to check out their stock) as they tend to have larger stocks and they show up faster.
My parents were in town this week helping out with my daughter. It was a very welcome bit of help. On Saturday, my father and I decided to head up to the Wilson Aquatic Center here in DC to get some swimming in. Little did we know, however, that 1.5 inches of snow was enough to debilitate DC to the point of closing the pool early. Alas, we left dejected and w/o a workout. I’ll have to make up for it this week.
There was recently a study done showing the use of the Wii Balance Board for the purposes of rehabilitating stroke patients. Apparently, very expensive “force platforms” are usually used to detect foot position while a stroke victim is relearning how to stand, walk and run. The study looked at the use of the Wii Balance board instead. The researchers found that the Wii Balance Board was comparable to the much more expensive “force platforms” in their effectiveness.
While this news doesn’t effect triathlon users directly. Its good to see that there are some actual medical benefits to the Wii Fit idea. This gives even more credence to the idea that the Wii Fit Plus for increasing your balance doesn’t just have anecdotal evidence to back it up. I plan to use Wii Fit Plus in my training to up my core strength, and improve both my balance and flexibility.

It’s near the new year, and that means one thing… New Years resolutions. We start the clock over, we make promises to do things and not do things for the new year. I get it. I think it is kind of dumb, but I get it.
I happen to be at the point where I need to get my body moving again in order to get my butt in shape for the upcoming year. I’m pretty worthless when it comes to training for the sake of training. Unless I have a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (BHAG) I’ll end up not doing much of anything.
Luckily for me right now (and unluckily for me about 3 months back), I hurt myself before my first Triathlon, so i have a very basic goal. I want to finish a Sprint Triathlon in 2010. In fact, I can narrow this down a bit more. My Dad has invited myself and my brother to do a triathlon with him on his 60th birthday. So, specifically, I am going to race and complete the Average Joe Triathlon on June 26, 2010. This gives me approximately 5 months to get my body in shape to do this again, and more precisely, to survive the swim, which is not my strong suit.
What beyond that? Well, my early goal is going to be to finish an Olympic Triathlon by the end of the year, but at this point, there is enough other stuff going on that I’m going to put off officially setting that goal.
Look for a new post coming soon about how I’m actually going to achieve said goals.
